Army Body Fat Calculator
Check height/weight standards and calculate body fat per AR 600-9
Based on AR 600-9 Army Body Composition Program
How Army Body Composition Works
The Army uses a two-step process to assess body composition. First, soldiers are screened against height/weight tables. If you exceed the screening weight for your height, age, and gender, you proceed to the tape test to measure actual body fat percentage.
Height/Weight Screening
The screening table (AR 600-9, Table B-1) provides maximum allowable weights based on height, age group, and gender. If you meet this standard, no further assessment is required.
Tape Test Methods
If you exceed screening weight, body fat is measured using circumference measurements:
- Simplified Formula: Uses only abdomen circumference for a quick estimate. Accurate for most soldiers.
- Traditional Method: Uses neck and abdomen (males) or neck, waist, and hip (females) for the official DoD calculation.
Maximum Body Fat Standards
| Age Group | Male Max | Female Max |
|---|---|---|
| 17-20 | 20% | 30% |
| 21-27 | 22% | 32% |
| 28-39 | 24% | 34% |
| 40+ | 26% | 36% |
AFT Exemption
Soldiers who score 465 or higher on the AFT with at least 80 points in each event are exempt from body fat requirements, even if they exceed screening weight.
